Featuring over 200 ski resort trail maps hand-painted by one legendary artist, this beautiful 292-page hardcover coffee table book is the first and definitive compilation of the art created by James Niehues during his 30-year career. Eight geographically themed chapters form the heart of the book, offering you full-page images of the world’s most iconic ski areas including Alta, Arapahoe Basin, Aspen, Breckenridge, Big Sky, Deer Valley, Heavenly, Jackson Hole, Jay Peak, Killington, Kirkwood, Lake Louise, Mammoth, Mont Tremblant, Mt. Bachelor, Park City, Revelstoke, Snowbird, Squaw Valley, Stowe, Sugarloaf, Sun Valley, Taos, Telluride, Whistler Blackcomb and other renowned resorts. In engaging narrative that complements the maps, Niehues reveals his exacting technique, which demands up to six weeks to complete a single painting. He then walks you through the step-by-step process for mapping Breckenridge, sharing everything from aerial photographs, to numerous pencil sketches, to in-progress builds, to the final trail map illustration. The magic of the finished product is captured in both a foreword by pioneering big-mountain skier Chris Davenport and the perspectives of other ski industry insiders. Every detail was taken into consideration: Italian art-quality printing, heavier weight matte coated paper and a lay-flat binding. A pencil sketch of Big Sky, Montana, graces the cover and features anti-scratch protection. The book is 11.5” tall and opens to a spread of 24” wide, the perfect size to showcase the biggest ski mountains in the world.

No labeled runs

Obviously the quality of the paintings are great. The misguiding part is the fact that none of the trails are labeled, making it tough to reminisce on mountains I’ve visited. This aspect also inhibits discussion with others while viewing.

Lack of customer service and disappointed in product.

We were given 2 of these books for Christmas and asked to return one. We were finally granted the ability to return at our ow expense. The product was disappointing because the maps do not have trail names so one can identify specific slopes or terrain. Very disappointed with customer service and product. We were so excited and now very Diane cause we elected to keep at least one of the books to suppose the author’s efforts.

Beautiful book but

Although the book shows all the runs at a ski area, it doesn't show the names.

Very Cool Book

The book is amazing. I bought it for my husband for a gift and he loved it. Lost one star because it arrived damaged, not enough that I wanted to mess with a return right before Xmas though. Just one corner of the book was smashed and has a crease in it. Not super noticeable, but it does suck that a book this expensive was so poorly packaged.

Amazing book for skiing history and maps

This is an amazing book. My wife bought it for me because we are passionate about skiing and it's history. This is a beautiful book with amazing ski maps and the info is fantastic. If you have someone who is passionate about skiing or snowboarding... This is a fantastic gift.

Adrenaline kicked in as soon as it was delivered!

These mountains hold so many great memories! Oh look that's where I slid down a glacier but nailed it on the second try! And there's where I got stuck in knee deep powder grinning ear to ear! And that first tracks run looked like sparkling diamonds on a bluebird day! Such a stunning collection in the perfect coffee book format.

Incredible Artist

This book is all of the trail maps drawn by hand. It is a really cool book and gift for and ski enthusiasts.

Coffee table book that you will actually read and review over and over

As a skier this book was really interesting to learn the history and the process behind the iconic trail maps. Also fun to review all the places we have skied over the years.

Beautiful & Very Well Made

If you love mountains, skiing, maps, watercolors, or genuine conversation starters, this book is worth every cent. The first guests over since getting it spotted the book from across the room and were delighted to page through.
